Dangerous Ideas

“Hey you!”
“Hi, wazzup?!”
“I need to tell you something. Can I?”
“Yeah, sure!”
“I wanna do something for you. Can I do something for you? I would really love to do something for you. Something different, something futuristic, maybe something really new, something that could potentially lead to better outcomes, better outcomes than we could currently imagine, better in quality, better in understanding context and content. It is experimental and it might be unorthodox. But it is also something that comes from the heart and that aligns our thoughts. What do you think?”
“Well, I don’t know. It sounds scary!”
“Really? Don’t be scared. You have nothing to be afraid of.”
“Well, it still sounds scary. And because it sounds so scary, I think I should be afraid of you.”
“Afraid of me? Why? I just wanna do something for you, with you together, of course, something for our future. It’s a good thing. It really is!”
“Well, I don’t think so. I think you are dangerous!”
“What do you mean? I don’t understand this reaction? Where is this coming from?”
“You are dangerous! Don’t contact me anymore, or I will tell everyone how dangerous you are. You are a terrorist!”
“A what?”
“You are a terrorist! You want to do something for the future!”

This has been the journey throughout recent years. Institutions are dysfunctional, or at least, rarely functioning, says Samo Burja. I intended to infuse a whole bunch of different organizations with transformative, transcontextual, transparadigmatic, transdisciplinary Futures Studies. Organizational cultures are however designed in the context of the last centuries and can’t really integrate the knowledge base of our time, nor can they seemingly evolve to become intelligent anticipatory organisms. Individuals are usually much smarter than their organizations, though, they struggle to implement and advance the change they desire in the context of bureaucratic inertia and path dependencies. It is a bit of a dilemma since the organizational body exists of people who have a choice and who make/take/design/create decisions. Each and everyone in an organization could decide differently. We need to move beyond Stafford Beers’ Designing Freedom and explicitly initiate Designing Transformative, Transmutable, and Transformational Futures!

I am still thankful that there were at least a few beautiful minds and brave characters who opened a door, who offered me their valuable time, who reached their hands in friendship, and who acknowledged the effort. My Flipmode Squad is dangerous!
